The Heartbeat of the Blues

Blues

Man, it's been a pleasure working with you on this project

Yeah, Jonathan, hey man, uh, I'm so happy we got to do this

Man, I finally got a chance to play with you, T.C

I know, we've been trying to play together forever, Jon

And you know what, man? This is just the beginning, y'all

Man, I been doing this for a very, very long time, man

I was playing the blues before I even realized I was playing the blues

How you really get started and everything?

Little kid wanting to be a funkateer, man

Like, you know, those funk guys, Earth, Wind and Fire, and all that

No, no, I'm saying I didn't like the blues, I didn't like it

What happened? What happened? What made you like the blues?

Me and my army buddies, man, we was the original Blues Brothers

We got together, we was gonna put the band back together

Things didn't work out, everybody ended up leaving

That was really the first serious soulful singer I ever worked with

And Otis said, "Hey, man, just keep it in the pocket," you know

Then we had a gig down here at the Mid-South Coliseum, man

B.B. King, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Little Milton

Tyrone Davis, O.V. Wright, Betty Wright, all of 'em

Yeah, you know, and I thought to myself, "

I don't wanna be around all these old folks

Well, uh, let me see, that was back in 1978

Don't try to add it up, Jon, don't try to add it up

Okay, okay, okay, there's too many numbers there

It just means he got the blues, that's all

But, uh, then it finally hit me, y'all, like, man, the blues

Little Milton had a song about, "Hey, hey, the blues is all right"

I was like, "You know what? The blues is all right"

Hey, hey, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait one second, listen

He sound like Keith Sweat, sound like he's dead

But anyway, you know, everybody talking about

The blues got discovered, you know, in Europe and

It was born in America by black folks in America

You know, the roots of the blues is in America

Then after I was, you know, working with Otis

It was a jam session after the concert in Chicago

And the band that was in there didn't wanna do the jam session

But me and my friends said, "Hey, man, we'll do it"

They said, "Hey, man, you know, we love those jam sessions, man"

Hold on, hold on, hold on, what's that right out here?

I almost sound like Paul Beasley, hold up, hold up

So I asked the band leader, I said, "Hey, man

Walter," his name Walter Scott, he up in Chicago

He said, "Man, go ahead, Tony, man, y'all

Always doing stuff for free, man, go ahead"

B. and Otis said, "Go into B.B.'s new song"

And he whispered to Cato, "Hey, man, get them boys' number"

And Cato Walker said, "I wanna see you, you, and

You, how would you like to work with B.B. King?"

He said it in front of all the other musicians

He said, "Well, B.B.'s upstairs, wanna talk to y'all"

We went upstairs, B.B. said, "Well, I talked to Otis Clay

I told him I was gonna ask you guys if you wanted a job

Well, would you fellas like to work with me?"

Yeah, yeah, Mr. King, yeah, we'll work with you

And then Burnett Fogg drove us from Chicago to Las Vegas

It was snow everywhere, trucks flipping over, all of that

We finally got to Las Vegas, we got there on that Sunday

We had left Thursday and got there that Sunday

And the gig was gon' be the next day, Monday

In Huntington Beach, California, the Golden Bear

So, Norman Matthews had all the food cooked for B.B

Y'all remember old crazy Norman, everybody know Norman Matthews

We had some chitlins, we had a big steak on the table

I reached for the steak, Norman say, "Son, don't do that

Don't do that, that's baby steak, get your hand off that!"

So I remember sitting at the table, I said

"So Mr. King, are we gon' have a rehearsal?"

"Rehearsal? What are we gon' rehearse for?

You know how to play the blues, don't you son?

Got with Bobby "Blue" Bland, he was like a second father to me

Blue was so smooth, man, Blue was smooth, man

Then Rod was born, his son Rod, you know Rod?

Yeah, I know Rod, we know Rod, we know old Rod

He was learning how to play drums, anyway

I want you to pay attention to my leg when it's moving

Make my leg move and you got the job good

The first day I was in the band riding in the bus with Blue

I said, "Mr. Bland!" He said, "Hey, first of all

It's either Blue or Bobby, which one you want?"

I said, "Okay, Blue," "Yeah, what is it?"

"When I was a kid, I used to take your records

Your 45's and throw 'em across the palmetto bushes"

He got up, walked to the back of the bus, he didn't say nothing

"Boy, is you crazy, why you say that to him, man?

I was sitting there listening to some Cameo, some funk on my headset

Blue sit across from me, he said, "Wait a minute, what's that?"

Why he ain't saying nothing 'bout my, 'bout that part?

We was tryna figure out what we were listening to

That's the drums, the heartbeat of the blues

Anyway, so Blue said, "What you listening to?"

I said, "Cameo," "You playing with them?"

And throw 'em across the bushes when you was a kid?"

'Cause you ain't playing none of my shit right"

"Understand? You need to go find 'em and listen to 'em

And that's why I love the blues, love the blues, man

I drank today, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh lord

Y'all don't know if y'all wanna do the blues or the church
